About Jazz Lab KC

The Beginning

Mutual Musicians Foundation

Mutual Musicians Foundation

Jazz Lab KC began in 2025 when Jason Myers returned from New York City inspired by a Jazz Lab experience he participated in there.

Seeing the opportunity to build on Kansas City’s rich jazz legacy, Jason envisioned a program to add to the city’s music community and give local musicians an opportunity to play, learn, and grow together.

To bring that vision to life, he partnered with the historic Mutual Musicians Foundation, ensuring Jazz Lab KC would be rooted in both the tradition and future of Kansas City jazz.

Jazz Lab KC is proudly hosted and run by the historic Mutual Musicians Foundation (MMF). Partnering with MMF ensures that every Jazz Lab session is connected to the heart of Kansas City’s jazz tradition.

By learning and performing in this legendary space, today’s musicians become part of a living legacy that has shaped jazz for more than a century.

The Foundation

Located at 1823 Highland Avenue in the 18th & Vine Jazz District, the Mutual Musicians Foundation grew out of Local 627, the African-American musicians’ union founded in 1917.

Recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the Foundation has long served as a social club, rehearsal space, classroom, and performance venue.

Recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the Foundation has long served as a social club, rehearsal space, classroom, and performance venue.

Legends like Charlie Parker, Count Basie, and Jay McShann once jammed within its walls, and the tradition continues today as musicians gather to play, learn, and carry Kansas City’s jazz heritage forward.

Our Approach

At Jazz Lab KC, rehearsals are designed to feel more like a bandstand than a classroom. Each session is instructor-led but informal, with a focus on learning how to thrive in a real improvisational environment. Musicians explore jazz standards, styles, and technique while gaining the confidence to interact with a group on stage.

There are no auditions — anyone with a solid handle on their instrument is welcome, as long as there’s room in an ensemble. Our rehearsals are collaborative and fun: participants experiment, share tips, compose together, and support each other without competition or judgment. Instructors step in as coaches and mentors, giving guidance when needed and stepping back when the group finds its own groove.

The result is a space where players not only improve their skills, but also connect with others, explore the history behind the music, and experience the joy of performing jazz in Kansas City’s most historic venue.
